The Free Form

Pocket Productions was proud to bring Columbia a fourth installment of Playing After Dark in a new performance space with new and exotic featured artists.

Calling on local artists, The Free Form premiered four eclectic, original dance pieces that infused multi-disciplinary artists within collaborative projects.Contemporary ballet dancer Sherry Warren performed original choreography with Columbia Classical Ballet principal Journy Wilkes-Davis, infused with original music by David Wright, film by Wade Sellars and photography by Kirill Simin.

Vista Ballroom and principles from Ann Brodie’s Carolina Ballet performed alongside live visual artists, Karen Storay and Marianna Simina. Aaron Pelzek used his guitar to narrate the love story of two Columbia Classical Ballet dancers. Charlene Spearen presented original poetry, accompanied by dancer and choreographer Stephen Ferguson.

Between dance performances, patrons enjoyed Columbia’s alternative rock metal band, The Noise, featured gallery artist Thomas Hammond’s photography, and more music from Tunguska. Also featured were live action puppet shows written and performed by The Columbia Marionette Theatre. Director Susan Ryan gave a preview of Broadway revival “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.” Rounding out the evening was a screening of USC Media Arts student Robert LeHeup’s short film “Spent Rounds.”
